Somthing from Niebuhr

Hello everyone. I'll probably post this on both xanga and myspace because I know that my vast constituencey of readers is divided between the two.

Ruth and I are doing well here. She has begun language school, and I have another six weeks before mine begins.... so she's getting a good head start.

Really, I just wanted to throw out an excerpt from Reinhold Niebuhr's "Moral Man & Immoral Society" that has had me thinking for the last couple of days....

Speaking on the rational resources of the individual for social living, he says:
" The failure of even the wisest type of social pedagogy to promp benevolences as generous as those which a more intimate community naturally evolves, suggests that ethical attitudes are more dependent upon personal, intimate and organic contacts than social technicians are inclined to assume. The dependence of ethical attitudes upon personal contacts and direct relations contributes to the moral chaos of a civilisation, in which life is related to life mechanically and not organically, and in which mutual responsibilities increase and personal contacts decrease."

Niebuhr first published this work in 1932. Imagine how much more applicable today...... though post-modernism may lend a hand.

In Sudan

Well hello to the three people who may look at my xanga site.

Ruth and I have arrived in Sudan and are excited to begin life here. There are so many things that are different from home, but that just makes things more of an adventure.

I'm sure that one of us will be posting some picture as soon as we get them..... (probably Ruth)

I guess that's it for now then.
